About Givat Haviva Advanced Arabic Studies
Established more than 50 years ago, Givat Haviva is a prominent institute in Israel for studying Arabic and the recipient of the UNESCO Prize for Peace Education. Its academic center expanded and has been teaching English-speakers to successfully speak and think in Arabic for the past 10 years.
We believe that Arabic is a living language. While many universities’ primary interest is in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), we also see the urgent need for students and researchers to gain fluency in the many different Arabic dialects in order to understand and communicate with native speakers in addition to understanding Arabic media, which includes all registers of the Arabic language and often multiple dialects appearing simultaneously in the same program or news item. As such, we believe that Arabic cannot be taught solely in the classroom; in order to gain Arabic fluency, students must plunge into real life situations where Arabic is spoken. We like to teach Arabic as a living language - Our teachers speak in Arabic during all lessons: media, Koran, dialects, literature, grammar etc.
We believe that language is a bridge between people and cultures. It is from this basis that we work to facilitate intercultural meetings, intended for people from diverse backgrounds to get to know each other and their respective languages, and to gain insight into the nuances and complexities of intercultural relationships.
